Figawi Race Weekend has been a Cape Cod Memorial Day Weekend tradition since the 1970’s. This premier east coast sailing event draws more than 200 sailboats and thousands of visitors from all around the country.
The first Figawi (1972) was an informal challenge between friends to see who could sail from Hyannis harbor to Nantucket harbor the fastest. This first race was so beset by fog that the sailors were sometimes unsure of their location – thus the race’s name.
More than just a regatta, the weekend includes many special events, such as parties, raffles, auctions, and even a Memorial Day parade. If you plan on attending, NOW is the time to acquire accommodations.
Figawi Charity Ball, Auction & Raffle
Outside of having a lot of fun on the water, Figawi is primarily a source of charity for a wide variety of local causes. One of the bigger events attached to the race is the annual Figawi Charity Ball.
Figawi Charity Ball 2019 is scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 7pm to 1am. The event includes live music, delicious food, dancing, and casino. The ball also includes hundreds of items for raffle and silent auction, with all proceeds going toward local charities.
Hyannis to Nantucket Figawi Race Weekend
Figawi Race Weekend 2019 starts off on Friday at the Hyannis Yacht Club with a Registration and Kickoff Party. The party includes a buffet, cash bar, Figawi merchandise, and live entertainment. Competitors and fans are welcome.
Figawi is a “pursuit regatta,” which means that the slowest boat starts first, followed by the next, and so on, down to the very last and fastest boat. This format helps assure that most boats will reach Nantucket Harbor around the same time, conditions depending, of course.
The parade of sailboats out of Lewis Bay to the Hyannis Port begins around 8am, Saturday morning. The first boat will cross the start line on Saturday at 10am, the last at noon.
On Nantucket, a tent on New Whale Street will offer music, sponsors tables, and drinks, to those awaiting the finish. There will also be a variety of gatherings at bars, restaurants, and halls.
The Competitor Party under the tent on New Whale Street will kick off to celebrate the day’s race at 7pm. Come dance and congratulate the sailors. Music will be provided by BearFight.
The Prize Giving Ceremony takes place on Sunday, between 5 and 6pm and is followed by the Wrap Up Party, from 7 to 10pm.
Sunday also sees the annual the Figawi Invitational, featuring high school sailing teams from across the region. The races take place off the docks of Nantucket Boat Basin at 11:30am, with winners receiving the coveted Figawi Jr. Trophy.
And don’t forget the Nantucket Memorial Day Parade down Main Street at 1pm!
